เมื่อวันที่ 2 พฤษภาคม  2559 ที่ห้องประชุมชั้น 3 สำนักงานเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต นายโชคดี อมรวัฒน์ รองผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต เปิดกิจกรรม เพื่อเสริมสร้างความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนาเมืองเก่าและกิจกรรมรับฟังความคิดเห็นและข้อเสนอแนะ ครั้งที่ 2 การกำหนดขอบเขตพื้นที่ เมืองเก่าภูเก็ต และแนวทางเพื่อการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมเมืองเก่าภูเก็ต ภายใต้โครงการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนา เมืองเก่า : กำหนดขอบเขตพื้นที่เมืองเก่ากลุ่มที่ 2 โดยมีนางสาวนิรมล มณีคำ ผู้อำนวยการกลุ่มงานอนุรักษ์และพัฒนากรุงรัตนสินทร์และเมืองเก่า สำนักงานนโยบายและแผนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมและสถาบันวิจัยให้คำปรึกษามหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เป็นผู้ชี้แจงในรายละเอียดต่อผู้เข้าร่วมรับฟัง ซึ่งประกอบด้วย นายกวี ตันสุคตานนท์ / นายแพทย์โกศล แตงอุทัย รองนายกเทศมนตรีนครภูเก็ต และผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้อง

การกำหนดขอบเขตพื้นที่เมืองเก่า กลุ่มที่ 2 ภายใต้โครงการอนุรักษ์และพัฒนา เมืองเก่า ประกอบด้วย เมืองเก่าราชบุรี เมืองเก่าสุรินทร์ เมืองเก่าภูเก็ต และเมืองเก่าระนอง ซึ่งจัดโดยสำนักงานนโยบายและแผนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่ออนุรักษ์และพัฒนาเมืองเก่าเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม และเป็นฐานในการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยว ทางวัฒนธรรม โดยจะทำการศึกษาความสำคัญ ทางประวัติศาสตร์ สำรวจองค์ประกอบเมืองเก่า เช่น กำแพงเมือง คูเมือง โบราณสถาน อาคารที่มีคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์และสถาปัตยกรรม รวมทั้งย่านเมืองเก่า เพื่อให้มีขอบเขตที่ชัดเจน ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ประชาชนสามารถดำรงชีวิตได้อย่างสอดคล้อง กับการปกปักรักษามรดกทางวัฒนธรรมอย่างยั่งยืน

ทั้งนี้ ที่ผ่านมา สำนักงานนโยบายและแผนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ได้ดำเนินการกำหนดขอบเขตเมืองเก่า และได้รับความเห็นชอบจากคระรัฐมนตรีแล้ว จำนวน 18 เมือง แบ่งเป็น ภาคเหนือ 7 เมือง ภาคกลาง 3 เมือง ภาคตะวันออก 2 เมือง และภาคใต้ 4 เมือง.
