เมื่อวันที่ 21 กันยายน 2559 ที่ห้องประชุมเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต นายสาธิต กลิ่นภักดี ท้องถิ่นจังหวัดภูเก็ต เป็นปรานการตรวจประเมินการบริหารจัดการขยะขององค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น โดยมีนางสาวสมใจ สุวรรณศุภพนา นายกเทศมนตรีนครภูเก็ต คณะผู้บริหาร หัวหน้าส่วนราชการของเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต และคณะกรรมการจากส่วนราชการต่าง ๆ เข้าร่วม
นายสาธิต กลิ่นภักดี กล่าวว่า ตามที่คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 15 ธ.ค. 58 รับทราบการดำเนินโครงการมอบของขวัญปีใหม่ 2559 “เสริมสร้างชีวิตใหม่ ให้คนไทยมีความสุข” โดยกรมส่งเสริมการปกครองท้องถิ่นนำหลักการดังกล่าวมาประยุกต์ใช้ผ่าน “โครงการท้องถิ่นไทยใส่ใจความสะอาด คนในชาติมีความสุข” และจังหวัดได้แต่งตั้งคณะกรรมการตรวจติดตาม “โครงการท้องถิ่นไทยใส่ใจความสะอาด คนในชาติมีความสุข” ตามคำสั่งจังหวัดภูเก็ตที่ 203/2559 ลงวันที่ 19 มกราคม 2559 ไปแล้ว นั้น
ในวันนี้ ทางคณะกรรมการจึงได้มีการตรวจประเมินการบริหารจัดการขยะของเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต ว่าได้มีการดำเนินการตามตัวชี้วัดที่ได้กำหนดหรือไม่ โดยมีผู้บริหารและเจ้าหน้าที่เทศบาลนครภูเก็ตเป็นผู้ให้ข้อมูลในการประเมิน ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้การรณรงค์ลดปริมาณขยะเป็นไปตามเป้าหมายที่ทางภาครัฐวางไว้ต่อไป
