เมื่อวันที่ 7 กันยายน 2559 ที่ห้องลีลาวดี โรงแรมบูกิตา สำนักงานพัฒนาสังคมและความมั่นคงของมนุษย์จังหวัดภูเก็ต จัดประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการเตรียมความพร้อมคณะอนุกรรมการควบคุมขอทานจังหวัด และอนุกรรมการคุ้มครองคนไร้ที่พึ่งจังหวัดภูเก็ต โดยมี พ.ต.อ.พีรยุทธ การะเจดีย์ รองผู้บังคับการตำรวจภูธรจังหวัดภูเก็ต พร้อมด้วยนายวิชา ไพโรจน์ ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์คุ้มครองคนไร้ที่พึ่งจังหวัดภูเก็ต เป็นวิทยากรให้ความรู้ และมีส่วนราชการและผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องเข้าร่วม

นายวิชา ไพโรจน์  เปิดเผยว่า สถานการณ์คนขอทาน คนไร้ที่พึ่งในจังหวัดภูเก็ต พบน้อยมาก เมื่อเทียบกับจังหวัดอื่นๆ เนื่องจากจังหวัดภูเก็ตเป็นเมืองเศรษฐกิจและมีนักท่องเที่ยวเดินทางมาจำนวนมาก ทำให้ต้องมีการดูแลผู้ที่เข้ามาอยู่อาศัย และจากการเก็บสถิติตั้งแต่เดือนตุลาคม 2558 – สิงหาคม 2559 พบผู้มาใช้หรือรับบริการจากศูนย์คุ้มครองคนไร้ที่พึ่งจังหวัดภูเก็ต จำนวน 105 ราย แยกเป็น ขอทาน จำนวน 14 ราย คนไร้ที่พึ่ง จำนวน 52 ราย และเหยื่อการค้ามนุษย์ จำนวน 39 ราย โดยศูนย์จะทำหน้าที่เป็นส่วนหน้าในการคุ้มครองสวัสดิภาพด้านปัจจัย 4 ประสานส่งต่อ รวมทั้ง สืบเสาะหาญาติให้มารับตัว ซึ่งหากเป็นต่างด้าวก็จะผลักดันออกนอกประเทศ
