เทศบาลนครภูเก็ตและรัฐบาลปีนัง ร่วมกับสโมสร Apex Penang จัดกิจกรรมปั่นจักรยานทางไกล 850 กิโลเมตร ครั้งที่3 (3 rd APEX 850 Km Endrerance) ภูเก็ต – ปีนัง ระหว่างวันที่ 27-30 สิงหาคม 2558 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อจัดหาทุนช่วยเหลือนักเรียนที่ขาดแคลน

นางสาวสมใจ สุวรรณศุภพนา นายกเทศมนตรีนครภูเก็ต เปิดเผยว่า  การปั่นจักรยานทางไกล 850 กิโลเมตร หรือ Apex 850 เป็นการปั่นจักรยานระดมทุนเพื่อการกุศล ในการช่วยเหลือผู้ที่ขาดแคลนและผู้สูง อายุไม่ว่าจะเป็น ด้านการศึกษาหรือ ด้านการแพทย์  ซึ่งสมาชิกอาสาสมัครของ Apex  Club จะจัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปี  โดยการสนับสนุนของรัฐบาลปีนัง สำหรับในปีนี้ ซึ่งจัดเป็นครั้งที่ 3  จังหวัดภูเก็ตได้รับเลือก  ให้เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการปั่นจักรยานทางไกลเพื่อการกุศล ด้วยการประสานงานของนางสาวเอกจิต  กรัยวิเชียร กงสุลใหญ่ ณ เมืองปีนัง ในการเชื่อมโยงความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีระหว่างภูเก็ตและปีนัง ในฐานะที่เทศบาลนครภูเก็ตเป็นเมืองคู่ปีนัง

นายกเทศมนตรีนครภูเก็ต กล่าวอีกว่า สำหรับการปั่นจักรยานทางไกลในครั้งนี้ จะมีนักปั่นจักรยานเข้าร่วมปั่น จำนวน 30 คน จาก 5 ประเทศ คือ ประเทศมาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ ฟิลิปปินส์ อินโดนีเซียและไทย โดยการปั่นจักรยานจะเริ่มต้นออกจากจังหวัดภูเก็ต ในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 27 สิงหาคม 2558 เวลา 06.00น ณ บริเวณด้านหน้าโรงแรมรอยัลภูเก็ตซิตี้ ถนนพังงา อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดภูเก็ต ไปยังจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี นครศรีธรรมราช หาดใหญ่ และจะสิ้นสุดการเดินทาง 850 กิโลเมตร ในปีนัง  ซึ่งตลอดเส้นทางจะมีทีมแพทย์และเจ้าหน้าที่ติดตามคณะนักปั่นตลออดเส้นทาง
