ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ตและผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องศึกษาดูความก้าวหน้าด้านเทคโนโลยีของระบบขนส่งมวลชนเตรียมเสนอข้อมูลให้รัฐบาลประกอบการพิจารณาโครงการรถไฟฟ้ารางเบาของจังหวัดภูเก็ต

วันที่ 18-22 ธันวาคม 2559 นายโชคชัย เดชอมรธัญ ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต พร้อมด้วย นายสนิท ศรีวิหค รองผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต นายศิริเกษ อภิรัตน์ เลขานุการคณะกรรมการกำกับการศึกษาโครงการขนส่งมวลชน หรือ สนข. และคณะ เดินทางไปยังเมืองฉางชา สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน เพื่อศึกษาดูงานระบบขนส่งมวลชน และระบบเทคโนโลยีในการผลิตรถไฟฟ้า ที่บริษัท CRRC ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทผลิตยานพาหนะไฟฟ้าและระบบขนส่งมวลชนทุกประเภท ทั้งรถไฟความเร็วสูง รถไฟความเร็วต่ำ รถไฟฟ้าแม่เหล็ก รถรางไฟฟ้า หรือ ทรัม (Trum) เพื่อเป็นข้อมูลนำเสนอรัฐบาลประกอบการพิจารณาการดำเนินโครงการรถไฟฟ้าระบบขนส่งมวลชน จังหวัดภูเก็ต ซึ่งขณะนี้มีความคืบหน้าไปกว่า 80% และคาดว่า อีก 2 เดือนข้างหน้ารัฐบาลจะระบุความชัดเจนในแนววิธีการดำเนินงานรวมทั้งแหล่งทุนที่จะใช้ในการก่อสร้าง

นายโชคชัย เดชอมรธัญ กล่าวว่า การที่ได้มาดูการทำงานระบบขนส่งมวลชนและเทคโนโลยีของการผลิตรถไฟฟ้า ได้เห็นถึงความก้าวหน้าและพัฒนาการที่มีอย่างต่อเนื่อง เป็นสิ่งที่ดีและมีประโยชน์เพื่อนำข้อมูลเสนอรัฐบาลประกอบการตัดสินใจ โดยผู้ที่รับผิดชอบจะได้นำไปปรับแบบให้สมบูรณ์ที่สุด คุ้มค่าทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ การเงิน ผลตอบแทนการลงทุน และสอดคล้องกับความต้องการของพี่น้องประชาชนชาวภูเก็ต ที่ต้องการแก้ไขปัญหาการจราจร และอำนวยความสะดวกเพื่อคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น โดยภายหลังจากการปรับแบบให้สมบูรณ์และแก้ไขปัญหาได้อย่างเบ็ดเสร็จ จะนำเสนอคณะกรรมการ EIA ซึ่งหลังจากผ่านคณะกรรมการ EIA แล้ว ทาง สขร. จะได้นำเสนอครม.ต่อไป

สำหรับรถไฟฟ้ารางเบา มีระยะทาง 60 กม. เป็นระบบรางคู่ ใช้เส้นทางวิ่งในแนวเกาะกลางถนน มี 23 สถานี เริ่มต้นจากสถานีท่านุ่น จังหวัดพังงา ผ่านเข้าสู่สนามบินนานาชาติภูเก็ต ผ่านเข้าสู่ตัวเมือง และไปสิ้นสุด ที่ สถานี ห้าแยกฉลอง ใช้เงินทุนในการก่อสร้าง ประมาณ 30,000 ล้านบาท
