เมื่อวันที่ 19 พฤศจิกายน 2558 ที่ห้องประชุมชั้น 5 อาคารสำนักงานอธิการบดีฯมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ (ม.อ.) วิทยาเขตภูเก็ต อ.กะทู้ จ.ภูเก็ต มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ ร่วมกับ สำนักส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมซอฟต์แวร์แห่งชาติ (องค์การมหาชน) หรือ ซิป้า แถลงข่าวการเตรียมความพร้อมเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขันเขียนโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ระดับโลก ACM-ICPC World Finals 2016 ซึ่งกำหนดจะจัดขึ้นในระหว่างวันที่ 15-20 พฤษภาคม 2559 โดยมีดร.ประเจียด อักษรธรรมกุล รองผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต พลเอก โสภณ เวคะวากยานนท์ กรรมการผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ รักษาการในตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการสำนักงานส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมซอฟต์แวร์แห่งชาติ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.วรวุธ วิสุทธิ์เมธางกูร รองอธิการบดีฝ่ายวิชาการ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ วิทยาเขตภูเก็ต รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.อุดมผล พืชน์ไพบูลย์ คณบดีคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ และ ศ.ดร.บิล เพเชอร์ ผู้อำนวยการ ICPC มหาวิทยาลัยเบเลอร์ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ร่วมแถลงข่าวด้วย

สำหรับการแข่งขันการเขียนโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ ACM-ICPC หรือ The ACM – International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) เป็นการแข่งขันการเขียนโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ระดับอุดมศึกษานานาชาติที่เก่าแก่ที่สุด ตั้งแต่ปี 1977 มีจัดการแข่งขันชิงชนะเลิศระดับโลกเป็นครั้งแรก โดยการแข่งขันนี้มีหลากหลายระดับ ตั้งแต่ภายในประเทศ และระดับภูมิภาคทวีป ซึ่งจัดโดยมหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆ ทั่วโลก ดำเนินงานภายใต้การอุปถัมภ์ขององค์กร ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) และได้รับการสนับสนุนจากบริษัท IBM โดย องค์กรICPC มีสำนักงานใหญ่ตั้งอยู่ที่ Baylor University, Texas, USA เกือบสี่ทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา ACM-ICPC ได้กลายมาเป็นโปรแกรมการแข่งขันระดับโลกที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจ เปิดโลกทัศน์ และส่งเสริมประสิทธิภาพ ของนักศึกษาด้านคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่ละปีมีจำนวนผู้เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในทุกระดับเพิ่มขึ้นทุกปี การแข่งขันการเขียนโปรแกรมระดับโลก ตั้งแต่ IBM เป็นสปอนเซอร์ให้การแข่งขันในปี 1997 จำนวนผู้เข้าร่วมแข่งขัน ACM-ICPC ได้เพิ่มขึ้นกว่า 1500% และจากสถิติในปี 2014 ที่ผ่านมา ในการแข่งขันระดับท้องถิ่น (Local Contests) ภายในประเทศมีนักศึกษาร่วมแข่งขันกว่า 300,000 คนทั่วโลก และมีผู้เข้าร่วมแข่งขันระดับภูมิภาคทวีป (Regional Contests) ทั้งสิ้น 38,160 คน จากมหาวิทยาลัย  2,534 แห่ง จาก 101 ประเทศใน 6 ทวีปทั่วโลก

รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.วรวุธ วิสุทธิ์เมธางกูร รองอธิการบดีฝ่ายวิชาการ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ วิทยาเขตภูเก็ต กล่าวว่า มหาวิทยาลัยมีความยินดีและเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่จะเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขัน ACM-ICPC World Finals ครั้งที่ 40 ในปี 2016 ระหว่างวันที่ 15-20 พฤษภาคม 2559 ซึ่งเป็นการแข่งขันการเขียนโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ระดับอุดมศึกษาที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลก โดยทางมหาวิทยาลัยได้จัดกิจกรรมการแข่งขัน ACM-ICPC มาตั้งแต่ปี 2009 ทั้งในระดับภายในประเทศและระดับภูมิภาคเอเชีย และได้รับการสนับสนุนด้วยดีจากซิป้าจนถึงปัจจุบัน ทำให้การแข่งขันนี้เป็นที่รู้จักทั้งในระดับชาติและระดับนานาชาติ มีมหาวิทยาลัยชั้นนำจากประเทศต่างๆ ในภูมิภาคเอเชีย เช่น จีน สิงคโปร์ ไต้หวัน ฮ่องกง มาเลเชีย ญี่ปุ่น เกาหลีใต้ ฟิลิปินส์ และอินโดนีเชีย มาเข้าร่วมแข่งขันที

มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์จัดขึ้นอย่างสม่ำเสมอ จากการเสนอตัวเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขันรอบชิงชนะเลิศระดับโลก ทางคณะกรรมการ ICPC และ IBM ได้พิจารณาเล็งเห็นศักยภาพของมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์และความพร้อมในด้านสถานที่ของจังหวัดภูเก็ต จึงได้มอบหมายให้มหาวิทยาลัยได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขัน ACM-ICPC World Finals ในปีหน้านี้
