นักท่องเที่ยวจำนวน 13 ล้านคน และเม็ดเงินสะพัดในพื้นที่กว่า 2.79 แสนล้านบาท คือสถิติการท่องเที่ยวของภูเก็ต ในปี 2557 แน่นอนว่าตัวเลขมหาศาลขนาดนี้ เป็นตัวบ่งชี้ที่ตอกย้ำว่าเหตุใดภูเก็ตจึงเป็นเป้าหมายทางการท่องเที่ยวระดับโลก หรือ World Class Destinationและแน่นอนว่าอีกองค์ประกอบสำคัญที่ต้องช่วยสนับสนุนให้ธุรกิจท่องเที่ยวจะเฟื่องฟูต่อไปอย่างยาวนาน คือ นักบริการด้านการท่องเที่ยว ซึ่งเป็นที่ต้องการของตลาดอย่างมาก ทั้งในเชิงปริมาณและคุณภาพ ด้วยปัจจัยที่เอ่ยมา Phuket College of International Tourism จึงเกิดขึ้นเพื่อเสริมเขี้ยวเล็บให้กับวงการท่องเที่ยวของภูเก็ต

ผศ.ดร. ประภา กาหยี เผยว่า “มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏภูเก็ต เข้าใจถึงปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น และได้ลงมือปฏิบัติอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม โดยการจัดตั้ง ‘วิทยาลัยการท่องเที่ยวนานาชาติ หรือ Phuket College of International Tourism (PCIT)’ โดยการสนับสนุนของสภามหาวิทยาลัย เพื่อมุ่งหวังให้เป็นวิทยาลัยชั้นนำด้านการท่องเที่ยวและบริการของประเทศไทย และประเทศในกลุ่มอาเซียน ผลิตบัณฑิตที่มีคุณภาพสอดรับกับความต้องการของตลาดงาน และดำเนินงานวิจัยและพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านการท่องเที่ยวที่ช่วยสนับสนุนระบบเศรษฐกิจให้เติบโตอย่างยั่งยืน รวมถึงให้บริการวิชาการและวิชาชีพแก่ท้องถิ่นเพื่อยกมาตรฐานสู่ระดับสากล ด้วยศักยภาพและประสบการณ์ของบุคลากร รวมถึงความชัดเจนของวิสัยทัศน์ พันธกิจ และรูปแบบการบริหารจัดการองค์กรเชื่อมั่นว่าวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้จะสร้างความเปลี่ยนแปลงในทางสร้างสรรค์ให้เกิดขึ้นโดยการผลิตคนทำงานระดับคุณภาพประดับวงการท่องเที่ยวและบริการได้อย่างแน่นอน

ด้าน ผศ.ดร. อรทัย ครุธเวโช รักษาการผู้อำนวยการ PCITกล่าว ณ งานเปิดตัว Soft Opening PCIT เมื่อวันที่ 14 ก.พ. 58 ว่า “วิทยาลัยการท่องเที่ยวนานาชาติ เป็นหน่วยงานภายในมหาวิทยาลัยที่เทียบเท่าคณะ จัดการเรียนการสอนด้วยหลักสูตรสองภาษา (Bilingual), หลักสูตรนานาชาติ (International Program) และหลักสูตรปริญญาร่วม (Dual Degree) เน้นการดำเนินกิจกรรมการเรียนการสอนแบบบูรณาการระหว่างความรู้ทางวิชาการ และการปฏิบัติงานจริง ในสาขาธุรกิจท่องเที่ยวทางทะเล และการจัดการท่องเที่ยวและบริการนานาชาติ รวมถึงจะเปิดเพิ่มอีก 2 สาขา ได้แก่ การจัดการอาหารและภัตตาคาร และการจัดการธุรกิจท่องเที่ยวอย่างยั่งยืน อีกทั้งวางแผนขับเคลื่อนที่สำคัญในอนาคต ได้แก่ สร้างมาตรฐานวิชาชีพด้านการท่องเที่ยวร่วมกับสถาบันรับรองคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพ ลงนามความร่วมมือกับกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬา รวมถึงประสานความร่วมมือกับสถาบันการศึกษาอื่นๆ และภาคเอกชน เพื่อให้มั่นใจได้ว่าบัณฑิตที่จบมาจาก PCIT จะต้องมีงานทำ และเป็นที่ต้องการของผู้ประกอบการธุรกิจการท่องเที่ยวและบริการของทั้งในระดับท้องถิ่นและนานาชาติ สำหรับสายงานที่ผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาสามารถไปปฏิบัติงานเป็นพนักงานหรือผู้บริหาร ได้แก่ มัคคุเทศก์, บริษัทนำเที่ยว, โรงแรม, ธุรกิจการบิน, ร้านอาหารและเครื่องดื่ม, ธุรกิจท่าเทียบเรือมารีน่า, ธุรกิจเรือสำราญ, ธุรกิจบริการ และด้านอื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยว”

ในส่วนของ นางสาวอังคะชา เผ่าจันทร์ นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 1 PCIT ให้เหตุผลในการเลือกศึกษาที่วิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ว่า “สาเหตุที่เลือกมาเรียนที่ PCIT เพราะเห็นสายงานด้านธุรกิจการท่องเที่ยวและบริการในภูเก็ตและจังหวัดฝั่งอันดามัน มีความต้องการบุคลากรจำนวนมาก มีรายได้สูง และมีโอกาสเติบโตในสายงาน จึงเลือกมาเรียนด้านนี้โดยตรง อีกทั้งต้องการเก่งภาษาอังกฤษ และมีประสบการณ์ในการฝึกฝนปฏิบัติงานระหว่างเรียน ซึ่งในจุดนี้ทาง PCIT มีรองรับในหลักสูตรไว้ทั้งหมด จึงมั่นใจและได้รับการสนับสนุนจากครอบครัว เพราะเชื่อว่าการศึกษาเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญช่วยเสริมโอกาสให้ประสบความสำเร็จในหน้าที่การงาน ขอเชิญชวนผู้ที่กำลังตัดสินใจหาสถานที่เรียน เพื่อหวังจะมีทักษะที่หลากหลายและได้งานทำแน่นอน PCIT เป็นทางเลือกที่เหมาะสมมากค่ะ”

จากสถิติบัณฑิตที่จบการศึกษา โปรแกรมวิชาอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยว ม.ราชภัฏภูเก็ต ระหว่างปี 2543 – 2552 มีจำนวน 2,186 คน ถือว่าเป็นสาขาที่ประสบความสำเร็จ และได้รับความสนใจจากนักศึกษา เมื่อจากโปรแกรมวิชา ถูกยกระดับสู่การเป็นวิทยาลัยการท่องเที่ยวนานาชาติ ด้วยความหลากหลายของหลักสูตรที่มากขึ้นบวกกับความเชี่ยวชาญของผู้สอน และความสัมพันธ์ที่แน่นแฟ้นกับภาคธุรกิจ สิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต คือ บุคลากรระดับคุณภาพ ที่มีความพร้อม เข้าใจงาน และปฏิบัติงานเป็น ออกไปสู่ตลาดงานการท่องเที่ยวและบริการ ไม่ใช่เฉพาะเพียงบนเกาะภูเก็ต แต่สามารถไปทำที่ไหนก็ได้ในระดับอาเซียน หรือระดับนานาชาติ นี่คือเป้าหมายที่ PCIT ได้ตั้งไว้และจะต้องทำให้สำเร็จ
